Tera Crawford  -  Artist’s Statement/ Bio

My work is a process of creating textures, patterns, images and combining colors.  I use gesso on watercolor paper, then layer it with acrylic washes and gel mediums.  I make stencils and stamps that I use to create textures and patterns for the backgrounds. The painted imagery usually comes from personal or found photographs, often vintage.  I like to combine realism with flattened imagery that focuses on positive and negative spaces.  I then cut, rearrange and layer until the image is complete.  The focus is on process and the evolution leads to something unexpected and unplanned.  I grew up in west Sonoma County and Studied art at UC Berkeley.  I earned a double Bachelor in Studio Art and Art History and then a teaching credential at SSU.  Currently I am living in Sebastopol with my family and working as an art teacher at Analy High School.  I find my work as a teacher very rewarding and feel blessed to be able to share the experience of making art with young blossoming artists.

APRIL ARTIST OF THE MONTH

Collages.jpg

COME MEET THE ARTIST – ‘1st Friday Artist Reception’

PUBLIC INVITATION

FRIDAY, APRIL 1st – 5PM to 7PM

ARTIST STATEMENT - Painting for me is not a choice but a way of life. My journey has taught me that seeing, and then translating what I see, is the real “truth” in my painting. I want to capture the moment when I first see and feel that glimmer of light on the landscape. I am especially grateful to live in Marin County, where water and land connect, and we are surrounded by beauty. I was born and raised here, and my perceptions have been shaped by that experience. All the elements of nature, as well as man’s imprint, converge in the San Francisco Bay Area. This ever-present source of beauty surrounds and inspires me. I truly love to paint life. I paint the landscape “en plein air” and also create figurative paintings and portraits in the studio or in natural light. I am a colorist, and paint what I see and feel.

Come meet Legacy Artist of Sonoma,

Cedora Del Scheiblich

Friday, March 4th 5pm to 7pm

Ninety-one years ago, along the Yuba River and near the little mining town of

Relief Hill, a baby girl, Cedora, was born to a young miner and his bride of less than

a year. As the second winter set in and their meager supplies dwindled, her

mother, Rosa, insisted on moving the family down from the Sierras. After a brief

stay in San Francisco they visited Sonoma Valley and decided no place could

be finer to set up their lifetime home. The valley was covered in fruit trees at the

time. Her father, Monte, went to work at the Hall Ranch and later at During

Hardware Store. Rosa went to beauty school and set up Blue Bird Beauty Shop,

the first of its kind in Sonoma. Monte, a would-be artist finally giving up, let

Cedora have all his oils and other art supplies. At nine years of age she found

herself in proud possession of all it took to create a masterpiece. This urge has

never left her and she hopes someday her dream will come true. She plans to

keep trying. During her teens there were no art courses at Sonoma Valley High

School except “free-hand drawing” taught by the drafting teacher. This class

gave Cedora a strong background in perspective.

Some of the notables with whom Cedora has studied: Eleanor de Haas Brooks,

1st teacher and later co-teacher, Albert Handell, Doug Dawson, &Clark Mitchell

Cedora has been teaching art classes for over 35 years. She started teaching

at her Victorian family home of 34 years, affectionately called “Big Pink”, and

that now houses ESTATE restaurant. She currently teaches at her home studio

near Glen Ellen. Cedora paints in pastels and oils, with landscapes and subjects

of nature being her favorites. Her love of travel has inspired some of her students

to join her on expeditions to the Southwest, the Canyon lands and as far away

as the jungles of Guatemala.

Cedora has been a member of the Valley of the Moon Art Assoc. since its

inception in 1958, a member of the West Coast Pastel Society and the Society

of Western Artists.

She is loved and respected by her talented students, some who have been

commited to paint and learn with her for over 20 years. Cedora considers them

each very talented artists and contributors to her artistic education. She feels

every artist and student she encounters adds some bit of learning to this

education.

See you here this Friday from 5-7pm,

James and Mila

Rick Bolen & Susan Loesch "Through Our Eyes"

OK so obviously I had a few to many espressos! I'll work on mellowing out my energy level in future videos.

Rick and Susan show some really beautiful photos from their vacations around the globe. As their art is beautiful so are they. I enjoyed hanging the show with Rick and Susan they have great relaxed energy about them and you can see they really love life.

One of my favorite photos is a jungle scene with a just a hint of a lovely naked lady in the foreground. Quite tastefully done. The photo was shot in Yelepa, Mexico at an amazing little resort Verana.

As always its an open invitation to our Artist receptions so plan an extra 30 minutes on your way to dinner or even before you go home to stop in. Vicki Mulas will be pouring her delicious wines and Marc and Sue will be playing some acoustic music.

See you here this Friday 5-7pm,

James and Mila

Suzy Sansom, November 2010
Harvest_Maiden___Suzy_Sansom_1.jpg

Artist Suzy Sansom often begins her creations on paper with a simple graphite "doodle" of lines and shapes that form a pleasing composition.  Then the artist will pull a figure out of those shapes, and in this manner, the dynamic, stylized subjects of her paintings are born.

At the Academy of Art College where she received her BA in Illustration in 1988, Suzy discovered her strength was drawing the figure.  In school is when she discovered her medium of choice–oil pastel–and it's then when the artist took her love of drawing the figure to the next level.  Her whimsical "Weird Women" painting series debuted in 1996.

In this series, Suzy has delighted in creating her "shapely", sometimes bawdy, always fun-loving gals, and engaging them in some of life's simplest, most joyous pleasures!  "If my art brings a smile to someone's lips or a giggle, then I've done my job well", says the artist, whose wine label illustration for "Big Ass Cab" (Adler Fels Winery) has won many fans nationwide, as well as the Silver Medal for Best Individual Wine Label Art at the 2004 International Wine Competition in San Francisco.

Carneros_Color___suzy_sansom_1.jpg

Most recently, Suzy has created a series of landscapes celebrating the local colors of the wine country in the fall. Suzy has participated in several local art invitationals since moving to her present home/studio in Old Towne Napa in 2004, including Jessel Miller's Napa Land Trust "Feast of Eden" benefit art auction, the Napa Symphony's annual art auction benefits, and is the 2008 Poster Artist for the ParentsCan Annual Fundraising Dinner and Auction.  The artist continues to work as a commercial artist, primarily for local wineries.
